2019 JavaScript Events and Austria

Last November I visited Vienna for the first time and fell in love with the city and its tech community. While I have spent much time in Europe, it was my first real time in Austria other than stops along the way between Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. So what made me fall in love with Vienna?

  • The community — I gave a meetup talk at React Vienna which was attended by more than 100 amazing people and engineers.
  • The city — the city is very walkable, has great history and architecture, lovely cuisine, and simply doesn’t feel overcrowded like many cities.
  • The people — I spent a good part of my weekend walking around Vienna with some of the organizers from React Vienna and had great conversations and saw many amazing sights.

It was during these walks around the city that I was asked if we would consider bringing HalfStack, our fun, authentic, quirky, UI-centric JavaScript conference and party to Vienna. After a bit of discussion, I was easily persuaded to help create HalfStack Vienna on the 19th of September!

Whenever creating a new event, there are dozens of questions that get asked, but a few are particularly important:

  • What are the costs to create the event?
  • What other events occur in the area?

Running a high quality, authentic event generally means finding sponsors and charging enough for ticket prices to cover the expenses and make sure you have a bit extra as there are always unexpected costs.

At the time Austria hadn’t had a great, authentic JavaScript conference for a while. The lovely ScriptConf was on hiatus in 2018. Since announcing HalfStack Vienna, there will now be three wonderful, authentic JavaScript events in Austria this year!

This is incredible and Austria very much deserves these type of events, where the attendee is the customer and not the product. Having this collection of excellent events reflects how much the JavaScript and web community has grown in Austria.

Some of the the organizers of ScriptConf are attending and speaking at HalfStack, and we hope to see the WebClerks community there as well. Similarly, some of the organizers from HalfStack will attend ScriptConf and WebClerks as well.

We’re very excited to be part of this year’s amazing and authentic JavaScript and web conference series in Austria, and hope you can make it to all three events, as each has their own focus and approach and amazing collection of speakers and festivities planned!
